Fixed orthodontics

Fixed orthodontics is the dental discipline that focuses on studying, identifying, and resolving issues related to malocclusion and dental misalignment. The device used is the celebrated fixed brace, which gradually brings each dental element to the desired position.

What are fixed braces?

Fixed, or rigid, braces are one of the most common orthodontic treatments used to correct malocclusion and tooth alignment problems.

This type of treatment consists of a series of brackets attached to the outer surface of the teeth and connected by metal wires.

Braces are applied after a comprehensive orthodontic evaluation, which includes dental X-rays, panoramic images, and photographic analysis. The dentist will meticulously plan each phase of the treatment, based on the specific needs and situation of each case.

How to clean your teeth with braces?

Oral hygiene with this type of device may be slightly more complicated, but it is important to implement dental cleaning just as accurately and regularly, after each main meal.

Choosing the right tools is paramount: orthodontic toothbrush, interdental brush, and other aids that, if necessary, will be recommended to you at the clinic.

What shall I do if the braces break?

If the braces break, they can cause significant inconvenience. In such cases, it is important to promptly schedule an appointment at our clinic to remedy the issue as soon as possible.

Braces are designed to function as an integrated unit, and if a part breaks, it can compromise the entire device. In addition, the broken pieces of the appliance can damage the surrounding teeth or gums, causing pain or inflammation.

How long does this treatment last?

The duration of treatment with braces will vary depending on the severity of the malocclusion and the patient’s response to treatment. On average, treatment lasts from between 12 to 24 months, but it can be longer for more complex cases.

Braces and daily life

Initially, fixed braces can cause some discomfort for a short period of time, such as tooth or gum sensitivity, or difficulty in eating. However, these symptoms tend to disappear within a few days after the device has been fitted and can be allayed completely by only consuming soft foods and by taking pain relief.

What happens at the end of orthodontic treatment?

Once the desired results have been achieved, the braces can finally be removed at our clinic.

The orthodontist may recommend the use of a retainer, such as a transparent tray, or the application of a thin wire fixed to the inner part of the teeth, to help maintain the new position.

Additionally, it will be important to continue practicing good oral hygiene and undergo regular dental check-ups to prevent the recurrence of malocclusion problems.
