Teeth whitening: what you need to know

Coffee, smoking, and other external agents can cause stains, discoloration, and yellowing of your smile… but restoring it to its former glory is possible!

Teeth whitening is one of the quintessential procedures in aesthetic dentistry. It helps remove superficial stains from the teeth and achieve a healthy, brighter, and radiant smile.

The treatment is comfortable, painless, and non-invasive: in no time at all, you will be able to restore the whiteness of your smile.

In our Clinic, we offer our patients two different alternatives:

  • Professional teeth whitening
  • At-home teeth whitening.

Professional teeth whitening, in detail

The procedure for professional teeth whitening is quite simple.

Firstly, the professional protects the patient’s gums with a gingival barrier to prevent the whitening gel from coming into contact with sensitive skin. Then, the whitening gel is applied to the surface of the teeth and activated with an LED or laser light, which accelerates the whitening process.

Professional teeth whitening can be completed in a single session or may require multiple visits depending on the severity of the stains and the desired shade. Usually, the result of the treatment is visible immediately with whiter and brighter teeth.

How long does a teeth-whitening session last?

The procedure typically lasts approximately 40-50 minutes.

How long do the effects of teeth whitening last?

The dental whitening treatment is not permanent, but its effects can last from six months to one year, depending on the patient’s dietary habits and oral hygiene practices. However, there are precautions that can help maintain white teeth for longer periods:

  • Avoid foods and beverages that can stain the teeth, such as coffee, licorice, or red wine.
  • Adopt proper oral hygiene practices, including brushing the teeth twice a day and using dental floss.
  • Avoid smoking.

Does the teeth whitening procedure have any side effects?

This non-invasive procedure does not have any side effects. The only minor discomfort that you may experience is increased tooth sensitivity in the hours immediately following the session, but it will quickly subside on its own.

Is teeth whitening effective on all teeth?

Teeth whitening is effective on natural teeth, not on fillings or artificial teeth.

At-Home Teeth Whitening

At-home teeth whitening, on the other hand, can be performed independently by the patient at home.

Upon visiting our clinic, an impression of the teeth is taken, and the patient will be given a comprehensive kit along with detailed, step-by-step instructions relating to the procedure. Our team will be available to address any questions or inquiries regarding usage.

Through teeth whitening, it is possible to achieve a whiter and more radiant smile, eliminating unsightly stains and discoloration.
