Treatment for Dental Cavities

Conservative dentistry is the discipline that aims to prevent the extraction of compromised teeth due to fractures or dental cavities, through the use of composite fillings. These fillings allow for the reconstruction of damaged tooth tissue, restoring both aesthetics and functionality, and eliminating any discomfort.

Dental Cavities: When are fillings necessary?

This form of conservative dentistry treatment is used when dental cavities are still in the early stages. In such cases, intervention can be relatively straightforward, saving the tooth and restoring oral well-being. Regular check-ups at the clinic are crucial, as they enable the early detection of carious lesions before the deeper tissue is affected, which will invariably lead to more complex interventions.

How to identify dental cavities?

Recognizing and understanding the signs of a carious lesion is of the utmost importance.

Book an appointment at the clinic immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:
• Discomfort, even intermittent, in a specific area of the mouth
• Hypersensitivity of one or more teeth
• Halitosis
• Gingival bleeding.

What are the causes of dental cavities?

The underlying causes of dental cavities can include:
• Poor and negligent oral hygiene
• Excessive consumption of sugary foods and beverages.

What happens if dental cavities penetrate too deeply?

In such cases, a simple filling will no longer be sufficient to save the tooth. If the cavity invades the innermost tissue of the tooth, the dental pulp, a treatment called root canal therapy or devitalization will be necessary.

Dental cavities: the filling procedure

What are the steps of dental filling? This procedure is essential to functionally and aesthetically rehabilitate the dental element. The first step is identifying the precise location of the carious lesion: using specialized instruments, we will verify the presence of any cavity and their stage of development.

Next, the infected tissue will be removed, and this operation will be performed with the assistance of local anesthetic, which will eliminate any discomfort or pain.

Subsequently, the area will be cleansed and reconstructed.

In our clinic, we use composite materials that allow for high-level aesthetic results and offer high resistance.

How long does the filling procedure take?

The duration of the procedure depends on the extent of the cavities. For smaller cavities it may take about 30 minutes, while for more intrusive ones, the total time for the procedure will be slightly longer.

Post-filling: what are the side effects?

The dental filling procedure does not usually have any particular side effects.

The only discomfort you may feel is the lack of sensitivity in the area where the anesthetic was administered. For this reason, it will be important to avoid beverages that are too hot or too cold and to wait a few hours before eating.
